Buying a fridge: volume, class, noise
The fridge is the one appliance that never switches off. That is why the energy class matters more here than anywhere else — and you hear the noise every evening.
How much volume do you need?
Rule of thumb: about 100 l of fridge space for the first person plus 60 l for each additional one. Freezer volume depends on whether you batch-cook — otherwise 60 to 80 l is plenty.
No frost costs volume
No frost saves you defrosting but needs hardware inside, making the appliance slightly smaller for the same footprint — and usually a little louder. If you freeze rarely, you can skip it.
38 dB is the threshold
In open-plan kitchens noise is the most common complaint. Below 38 dB the appliance disappears into the room; above it you hear the compressor kick in.
Quick checklist
- 100 l for the first person, +60 l each
- Under 38 dB for an open-plan kitchen
- Check height and door hinge side first
- The energy class pays back fastest here
