Buying a TV: size, panel, ports

The most common TV-buying mistake: buying too small. The second: paying for features your room will never show.

Size by viewing distance

Rule of thumb for 4K: distance in meters × 25 = sensible inch count. At 2.5 m, 65 inches isn't showing off — it's correct.

OLED or QLED?

OLED: perfect black, ideal in darkened rooms. QLED/LED: brighter, cheaper, better in daylight. For bright living rooms a very bright QLED is often the smarter pick.

HDMI 2.1 for consoles

Only HDMI 2.1 carries 4K at 120 Hz. If you own or plan a current console, look for at least two such ports.

Quick checklist

  • Mind the energy class — big panels cost money to run
  • Match the width with your furniture (see the width spec)
  • Price history: TVs rarely drop before big sport events, often after
